What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is a strength and conditioning brand. CrossFit combines weightlifting, sprinting and gymnastics movements. CrossFit says that proficiency is required in each of these 10 fitness domains: Cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, agility, balance, coordination and accuracy.

The CrossFit approach is to embrace, practice and train for functional mastery. CrossFitters at every level are on the same path moving from functional competency to functional dominance.

CossFit athletes run, row, jump, climb rope and carry odd objects. They use powerlifting and Olympic weightlifting techniques. CossFit athletes also use dumbbells, gymnastic rings, pull up bars, kettlebells and many body weight exercises. CrossFit does not use machines. They make machines.

Is CrossFit for me?

CrossFit is for everyone. The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect fitness program for any individual regardless of experience. The same routines have been used for elderly individuals with heart disease to professional cage fighters. We scale load an intensity, we do not change programs. The needs of Olympic athletes and our Grandparents differ by degree but not kind. (courtesy of CrossFit Inc.)

Not being able to complete a W.O.D. (workout of the day) does not mean you can’t do CrossFit. Taking a W.O.D and reducing the load, cutting the reps, dropping a set, taking longer rests, and sitting down during the workout is still CrossFit. In making the modifications the athlete is merely turning down the intensity.
